Almost 43,000 Americans lost their lives in crashes in 2021, with millions more injured. The rate of pedestrian fatalities grew 20 percent in the first half of 2020, and remains at a twenty year high. And transportation is now the leading source of greenhouse gas emissions.
Autonomous vehicles promise to significantly reduce road injuries and fatalities by avoiding the human causes of traffic crashes like distraction, speeding, or drinking. But the benefits of this technology can only be fully realized if we marry new driving software with a new kind of vehicle. Autonomy allows for vehicles with no driver, enabling dozens of safety innovations in vehicle design — or even vehicles with no occupants at all, just goods.
